Quote of the day – “Wow! I did not know that” category

The dirty little secret of conservative talk radio is that the average age of listeners is 67 and rising, according to Sinton—the Fox News audience, likewise, is in its mid-60s: “What sort of continuing power do you have as your audience strokes out?”

That is a very significant piece of data, for all the obvious reasons.

Quote of the day – “The Republican Party leader speaks” category

“Yesterday – this was Fox, no, take it back, this was PMSNBC…”

And a bit later, talking about Gordon Brown whom Rush describes as a “full-fledged committed socialist” and referring to the compliments Brown gave Obama, Rush said:

“but the slobbering, the slobbering…this guy, folks I’m tellin’ ya, if he keeps this up throughout the G20 Gordon Brown will end up with anal poisoning”

Sure, they’re nuts, but…

It’s probably a necessary aspect of one’s political/current affairs education to now and again check in with the rightwing sites like Redstate or Freerepublic and set to reading the comments posted.  Depressing and/or alarming?  Sure.  But one can wade through the sludge and at least note it’s current odors.

For example, this Free Republic  discussion on the NY special election contains a remarkable number of contributors (this is a seriously ‘conservative’ site) who express the view that the Republican Party is finished as a political organization.

Today’s quality snark

Writing on the New York special election which looks likely to head to the courts a la Franken/Coleman, Eric Kleefeld (who has covered the Minnesota case better than anyone) says:

So there you have it. This race is headed to the court system, which will oversee the counting and recounting of votes. One problem Murphy might have is that Al Franken’s lawyers aren’t available right now. And in Tedisco’s favor, Norm Coleman’s attorneys are busy, too.

Insanity

John Noonan, writing at the weekly standard, speculates that the Israeli air strike in the Sudan was a trial run for Iran.  He titles his piece “Israel Warms Up For Iran” as if he was talking about a baseball team on a spring morning.   Further along, Noon describes the mission as demonstrating “chutzpa”.  That’s the really cool thing about beginning a war which will kill, surely, thousands and maim many more…it shows chutzpah.

This Weekly Standard crowd warmonger as entertainment.

Minn. Judges Deal Blow To Coleman

A three-judge state panel in Minnesota dealt Norm Coleman (R) a serious setback in his bid for reelection to the Senate, ruling yesterday that only 400 absentee ballots in his contest against entertainer Al Franken (D) may be reviewed and possibly counted.

Franken leads Coleman by 225 votes, and the lead attorney for Coleman said that the number of ballots being recounted would make it a “long shot” for his client to make up the necessary ground.

But we’ve known for a while now that this result was likely coming and that the Coleman campaign would move to appeal.  The RNC wishes to keep Franken from sitting for as long as possible because of the effect on vote count in the Senate and the change it will make to fillibusters.  As Republican Cornyn said a couple of days ago, “It could take years” to sit Franken.

John Bolton will not be pleased

The Obama administration will seek a seat on the United Nations’ Human Rights Council, announcing Tuesday that it believed working from within was the most effective means of altering the council’s habit of ignoring poor human rights records of member states.
