Freeman Patterson

Canadian photographer.  Years ago, I went to see a slide show he put on in Vancouver.  He’d just returned from the Nabib desert where an old diamond mining town had been overtaken by the sand.

Quote of the day – “the line from Jesse Helms to John Bolton” category

“…states, above all the United States, that are democratic, and act in the cause of liberty, possess unlimited authority, subject to no external control, to carry out military interventions.”  Jesse Helms, 2000 speaking to the UN Security Council

from William Pfaff’s “Barbarian Sentiments” , quoted in “America, Right or Wrong”, Anatol Lieven, Oxford University Press, p. 80

A federal grand jury probe of the firings of nine U.S. attorneys during the Bush administration is focusing on the role played by recently retired Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) and former senior Bush White House aides in the 2006 dismissal of David Iglesias as U.S. attorney for New Mexico, according to legal sources familiar with the inquiry.   http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/02/grand_jury_investigation_of_us_attorney_firings_fo.php

Science facts to tell the kids before bedtime

Fossils from northeastern Colombia reveal the biggest snake ever discovered: a behemoth that stretched 42 to 45 feet long, reaching more than 2,500 pounds.

”This thing weighs more than a bison and is longer than a city bus,” enthused snake expert Jack Conrad of the American Museum of Natural History in New York, who was familiar with the find.  http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/02/04/science/AP-SCI-Monster-Snake.html

Breaking up is hard to-oo-oo do

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) — A self-described ”vampyre” and former fringe political candidate faces charges for threatening a teenage girl who tried to break off their relationship by telling him she was actually a vampire hunter.  http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/02/04/us/AP-Vampire-Jailed.html

In the interests of democracy, every forger’s vote must be counted

Oh boy, it looks like the Coleman legal team isn’t giving up on forgery.

Coleman attorney Joe Friedberg is going over rejected absentee ballot envelopes with Washington County elections official Kevin Corbid, and they came across a pair of ballots that came from a husband and wife, but all appeared to have all been signed by the same individual — apparently the husband signing his own name, and also forging his wife’s signature for her ballot.  http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/02/coleman-attorney-alleges-voter-committed-forgery—-and-wants-ballot-counted.php

I think this is an exquisite photo.  More than anything, it reminds me many of the wonderful  paintings that Disney artists did for background in their feature and short films.

More feel really good stuf

This just knocks my socks off.  While some humans (Dick Cheney) express themselves through torture and the deaths and maiming of hundreds of thousands, others express themselves in celebration of lives…

Today’s quote – “the god compass” category

L. Paul Bremer while running Iraq into a nightmare:

There is no doubt in my mind that I cannot succeed in this mission with the help of God.  The job is simply too big and complex for any one person, or any group of people to carry out successfully…We need God’s help and seek it constantly”

His brother, Duncan, while running for Congress in 2006:

I want to be God’s man in Washington.

Quoted in Jeremy Scahill’s “Blackwater”, p. 67

James Carville and Stephen Colbert on Limbaugh

Carville first:

He is the most exalted Republican. He is the leader of their party. They have submitted to him in the Congress. They quake at mighty Rush. And he’s the one that’s setting the Republican agenda. They don’t care what Michael Steele says. He can go do anything he wants. And we just have to acknowledge that kind of awesome political power within the Republican Party where it exists. And I was acknowledging power and hypocrisy which is, you know, two things that are in abundance in Washington.

“These Republicans are scared to death of Rush Limbaugh because he is the most powerful person in that party. Which is kind of odd that a political party has a radio talk show host as its intellectual power house, but that’s today’s Republican Party, and we Democrats have to acknowledge that.”   http://crooksandliars.com/silentpatriot/carville-rush-limbaugh-runs-gop

And Colbert:

Rep Mike Pence: Rush Limbaugh, who I admire, and like millions of Americans, I cherish his voice in the public debate.

Colbert: I cherish Rush’s voice too. That’s why he’s my ringtone.

Limbaugh: Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society.

Colbert: So true. It’s kind of like what talk radio does for unattractive men.

Bullet point: And whatever Glenn Beck is.

UK judges acccuse U.S. of threat over torture case

LONDON, Feb 4 (Reuters) – Two senior British judges accused the United States on Wednesday of threatening to end intelligence cooperation with Britain if they published evidence about the alleged torture of a Guantanamo detainee.

Britons could face increased danger if the judges defied the U.S. authorities and released full details in the case of Binyam Mohamed, an Ethiopian-born British resident who is held in Guantanamo Bay, they said.

Lawyers for British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said the threat had existed for some time and was still in place under President Barack Obama’s administration, according to a ruling from High Court judges Lord Justice Thomas and Lord Justice Lloyd Jones.  http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/news/2009/02/uk_judges_acccuse_us_of_threat_over_torture_case.php
