Poll:  Republicans Want Party To Be Like Palin

A new Rasmussen poll further demonstrates that the GOP could be in for a long stretch in the wilderness: A majority of GOP voters now say that the party should be more like Sarah Palin.

The numbers: 55% of Republicans say the party should be like Palin, compared to 24% who say they should be like John McCain.

As I’ve previously noted, poll data like this could indicate that the Republican Party is getting ready to relive the classic cycle of ruling parties who get turned out of power in a landslide: With the party base itself shrunk down, the people who are still around are the most hard-line members, and are really the least fit people to fix the situation.

Winning strategy?  GOP stakes its future on opposing Obama

WASHINGTON — Has the Republican Party, whose presidential candidate and dozens of congressional hopefuls were rejected by voters in November, already been reinvigorated by its opposition to President Barack Obama?

Party officials think so. They proudly point to the fact that all the GOP members of the House of Representatives stuck together last week and voted against the Democrats’ $819 billion economic stimulus plan, and to how the Senate, which is due to begin debate on the plan Monday, is full of similarly skeptical Republicans.

“We’ll look back to that (House) vote as one of the most significant votes Republicans cast. It gave them a very coherent voice,” said Michael Franc, a political analyst at the conservative Heritage Foundation.

The vote was a public demonstration of independence from Obama, who took the unusual step of meeting privately with congressional Republicans the day before the House vote. It also demonstrated what Republicans stand for, notably bigger tax cuts and less government spending.

The strategy carries enormous risks, however, because it could suggest that Republicans are eager to put the brakes on emergency aid to millions of Americans who are trying to survive what’s fast becoming the nation’s worst economic downturn since World War II.

It also creates a risk that the GOP, which no longer has a single House member from any of the six New England states and no senators from a Pacific coast state, is in danger of becoming a regional, ideologically focused party.

Loyal Bushies Creat Bush-Cheney Alumni Association Website to ‘Help Build A Lasting Legacy’

Even before President Bush left office, he and his loyal Bushies were hard at work shaping his legacy, comparing him to Abraham Lincoln and claiming his failed policies were smashing successes. Work on his presidential library has also been increasing in recent months.

The newest installment of “George Bush is a wonderful person” is now online: the Bush-Cheney Alumni Association website. All Bush employees, appointees, interns, campaign donors, and volunteers are eligible to join. The site’s mission is to be “a forum in which alumni can stay connected and help build a lasting legacy for President George W. Bush and the Bush-Cheney Administration.”

The site contains a considerable amount of hagiography, with the highlighted “Bush Record Documents” compilations called:

– The Bush Record: Praise For President’s Accomplishments

– The Bush Record: More Praise For President’s Accomplishments

– The Bush Record: Praise Continues For President’s Accomplishments

Many of the articles were written by conservative columnists or former Bush aides.

“From the totalitarian point of view history is something to be created rather than learned.  A totalitarian state is in effect a theocracy, and its ruling caste, in order to keep its position, has to be thought of as infallible.  But since, in practice, no one is infallible, it is frequently necessary to rearrage past events inn order to show that this or that mistake was not made, or that this or that imaginary triumph actually happened.”

Did Israeli officials help US firms win security tenders?

A secret seven-year investigation at the Defense Ministry has raised concerns that senior ministry officials used inside information to help certain American companies win more than $100 million in security-equipment tenders advertised in the United States.

However, the state prosecution closed the investigation in late 2007, citing insufficient evidence, after the ministry stalled the probe due to fears it would harm Israel-U.S. ties.

Corruption is hardly new, including in Israel.  The last two Prime Ministers and Netanyahu (and/or their families) have all been investigated on serious corruption charges (Sharon’s son was jailed).

What strikes me here is how essential the electronics/communications industries now are to military and intelligence operations.  To put it another way, we probably have to include Hewlett Packard and Cisco and even Verizon with Raytheon as parts of the military industrial complex.

Yesterday, as this year’s clash between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals neared a thrilling climax, TV viewers in Tuscon, Arizona, witnessed an intimate exposure of a completely different order.

Shortly after 7.30pm, with less than three minutes to play in a tightly fought final, the Cardinals had taken the lead with a crucial touchdown. Fans watching in Arizona would have been forgiven for scenting a victory for their team against the odds. Then the pictures from Tampa disappeared.

Instead, viewers in the Tuscon area were astonished to see a woman unzipping a man’s trousers to reveal “full male nudity” followed by what was described as “a graphic act” between the couple. Somehow, the feed from Super Bowl XLIII had been mixed up with a 30-second excerpt from Club Jenna, an adult cable TV channel featuring Jenna Jameson, one of America’s most famous porn actresses.

“The Ashbury Aqua” – because the world’s best swimmer deserves the world’s best pipe

The Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps quickly acknowledged his poor judgment after a photograph showing him inhaling from a marijuana pipe was published Sunday in a British newspaper. Although his admission is unlikely to effect his swimming eligibility, it could affect the millions of dollars he has secured in endorsement deals.

In a statement released Sunday by his marketing agency, Octagon, Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, did not challenge the legitimacy of the photograph published by the tabloid News of the World.

“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,” Phelps said. “I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”
