Music

For my money, which there ain’t much of any more, no other lyricist dead or not yet is a match for Ira Gershwin.  An example here with three amazing artists and, of course, with George underpinning it all.

Bush Legacy Project…the memo

This story broke a couple of days ago, of course.  The LA Times managed to get hold of a two page talking points memo for admin officials (and from there out to the usual conservative voices, one assumes) instructing them on how to talk about the “Bush legacy”.

To quote the Times description…

The document presents the Bush record as an unalloyed success.

Prices for sacrificial lambs skyrocket as Iraqis honor dead.

Likely, you’re thinking what I’m thinking here… as a canary/mine shift indicator tool, one probably ought to keep an eye out for Boeing, Blackwater, Northrop Grumman etc shifting investment dollars over into the sacrificial lamb futures market.  Clearly, trouble ahead.

Obama Team Rolls Out New Web Site That Takes Questions From Public

This is pretty interesting: An Obama aide points out to us that the Obama transition team has just rolled out an innovative new feature on its Web site, hoping to carry through on the President-elect’s campaign promises of greater government transparency.

It’s a page entitled “Open For Questions,” in which anyone can submit questions to the transition and, subsequently, to the administration.

The rub, though, is this: The public is able to vote on how much they’d like certain queries to be a priority, and the voting tally is visible — which means it’ll be tougher for the Obama team to not answer questions that participants clearly want answered.

Here’s how it works: Users get three options in voting on a question. They can vote in favor of a question being answered; they can vote against it being answered; or they can flag the question as inappropriate.

The Obama team is clearly exposing itself to a bit of a risk here. It could find itself choosing between answering an uncomfortable question and ducking one that the public is clamoring for an answer to. And if the state of the country fails to improve (or gets even worse) over the next few years, the public could also end up registering more and more negative questions.  http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/12/obama_team_rolls_out_new_site.php

Snark of the day

From Josh at TPM on David Vitter’s speech against auto bailout…

If you’re a right-wing family values politician who’s been caught giving substantial stimulus to the escort industry in at least two jurisdictions, don’t lecture me about the Automaker bailout.

An example of the shifting landscape

Anyone who has been following American politics closely will be aware of the Federalist Society. the influential organization of conservative lawyers and legal scholars begun by Robert Bork, Ted Olson, Ed Meese, Steven Calabresi and others.  The aims of the society were/are to promote conservative legal ideology through networking, workshops, activism and through facilitating appointments of members into positions of power and influence (see wikipedia here… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federalist_Society and website here… http://www.heritage.org/

There previously had been no comparable organization on the left, an omission which the liberal legal community was a tad slow in understanding.  A significant point of change arrived with Bush v Gore.

The following NY Times piece describes what has now evolved as a liberal counterpoint to the Federalist Society and it’s influence in the Obama administration… http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/11/us/politics/11network.html
